La quinta sesión del Comité Intergubernamental de Negociación de elaborar un documento mundial jurídicamente vinculante sobre el mercurio (CIN5) se llevó a cabo en Ginebra (Suiza) del 13 al 18 enero de 2013.
El sábado 19 de enero de 2013, a primera hora de la mañana, los gobiernos acordaron la aprobación del texto de un documento mundial jurídicamente vinculante sobre el mercurio que supuso el nacimiento del "Convenio de Minamata sobre el Mercurio".
